Meta Assembles Superintelligence Labs with $14.3 Billion Scale AI Investment
Social media giant recruits Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang to lead new team focused on AGI, deploying Muse Spark model across its platform ecosystem.

Meta has assembled a new Superintelligence Labs division led by Alexandr Wang, co-founder and CEO of Scale AI, following a $14.3 billion investment in Wang's company that brought him onto Meta's AI team. The initiative marks Meta's latest effort to close the gap with rivals in the race toward artificial general intelligence.
The team's first release, an AI model known as Muse Spark, now powers Meta's AI app and website, with planned integration across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and the company's AI-enabled glasses. Internally referred to as Avacodo, the model was designed to balance speed with capability in domains including science, mathematics, and health.
"This initial model is small and fast by design, yet capable enough to reason through complex questions in science, math, and health," Meta said in its announcement. "It is a powerful foundation, and the next generation is already in development."
Meta characterized Muse Spark as "an early data point on our trajectory," signaling that larger models remain in development. The company described the team as composed of "expensive AI leaders and developers" recruited from competing AI firms.
(The Superintelligence Labs formation follows Meta's creation of a dedicated "superintelligence team" tasked with pursuing AGI, a theoretical threshold at which AI systems would match or exceed human cognitive abilities across diverse tasks.)
The competitive landscape has intensified in recent months. Google advanced its position in November with the Gemini 3 model, demonstrating enhanced coding and research capabilities, while OpenAI responded with updates to GPT-5. Meta's previous Llama model releases were characterized as disappointing, prompting the company to escalate its investment in AI infrastructure and talent acquisition.
The Scale AI investment represents one of the largest strategic partnerships in the current AI development cycle, binding a leading data annotation and AI training platform directly to Meta's product roadmap. Wang's dual role as Scale AI CEO and Meta AI team leader creates an unusual corporate structure linking two entities at the center of the AI supply chain.
